Man bitten by suspected coyote after mistaking animal for dog police say

Aman in Ashburnham is recovering Monday after getting bitten by what he thinks could have been a coyote, police said.The incident happened Sunday night on Dunn Road, police said. “I just saw what I thought was a husky, and there’s plenty of neighborhood dogs that walk around, so I put my hand out and came right up to me,” said River Labrecque.“And then bit my hand, bit my stomach and then bit my ankle and it took off after I kind of swung my leg.”Labrecque was taken to Heywood Hospital for rabies treatment, police said. “Local police unsuccessfully tried to locate the canine, and the Environmental Police also investigated and are monitoring the area,” Environmental Police said in a statement.”At this time, no one can confirm whether the animal involved in this incident is a domestic dog or a coyote.”Attacks by coyotes on people are “rare and unusual” events in Massachusetts, and there has only been seven reported attacks since the 1950s, Environmental police said.Police warn residents to watch their pets and to not approach or feed unknown animals.Environmental police are also investigating the incident.
